Walter Cline

Walter (Terry) Cline
Walter Cline (born 1962) is a technology professional with over three decades of practical experience.
Cline is currently serving as the Vice President of Sales Support for tsaADVET (Pittsburgh, PA)
Cline has held prestigious professional and volunteer positions with various organizations throughout his career.
Full name: Walter David John Henry Patrick Terrance Cline IV
Education
Cline graduated High School from Sam Rayburn HS in Pasadena, TX.
Cline attended classes at University of Houston before devoting full time to career and family.
Cline has completed numerous industry related classes conducted by Intergraph, Compaq, Bentley and Bluebeam.
Career

After completing a three month class on Piping Drafting & Design, Cline spent nine months working at the Conoco VCM plant in West Lake, LA. working directly with pipe fitters and piping designers on a plant retrofit project.
Tasks included walking pipe racks and climbing towers to place metal tags on specific equipment like valves, in addition to producing P&ID and isometric drawings of the work to be completed.

Cline accepted a job as a piping draftsman/designer using 2D CAD for the first time. Eight LSI workstations were connected to a DEC PDP/1170 mainframe system.
The system crashed so frequently, a red flashing light was installed in the ceiling of the CAD room to notify users when the system was down and being rebooted.

Cline next moved to Caudill Rowlett Scott (an AEC design firm based in Houston, TX). During this time Cline attended numerous classes at Intergraph's Huntsville, AL facilities.
Classes included: 3D modeling with IGDS, Database management, Strategic Planning (STPL), Space Planning Facilities Layout (SPFL) and others.

Not long after Cline joined the firm, CRS and J.E. Sirrine merged to create CRSS. In 1985 Cline relocated to a CRSS office in Dallas as the Director of CADD Services.
It was during this time that Cline was first introduced to Bentley's MicroStation (a CAD application running on a DOS PC platform) and participated in the creation of the MicroStation steering committee.
This was followed by a subsequent relocation to Greenville, SC in 1987 to continue the deployment of CAD technology throughout CRSS and ensure it's proper use.
CRSS projects Cline worked on included the Chrysler Technology Center, Saturn Dealership Design for GM, renovations to add skyboxes in the Houston Astrodome, Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC) and others.
Eventually CRSS was dissolved with CRS going to HOK and J.E. Sirrine going to Jacobs Engineering in 1994.

Frustrated with not being allowed to share the 3D models and animations he was generating, and wishing to be back in the Houston area Cline moved to M.W. Kellogg in 1988.
At M.W. Kellogg Cline provided technical support for hundreds of CAD users working on various workstation types (PCs, as well as CLIX based InterPro & InterAct terminals).
It was in early 1988 that Cline got involved with the Texas GUG (TGUG) and began giving public presentations on MicroStation, 3D modeling and related subjects. One of these public presentations
was attended by Scott Bentley of Bentley Systems and Cline was asked to repeat the presentation at the International Intergraph Users Group (IGUG) in Huntsville, AL.
Ironically, the gentleman who had run the 1980 Piping Drafting & Design course at CE-Lummus (who was now employed by the University of Houston) attended that session and asked Cline to consider teaching
continuing education classes at the University (an Authorized Intergraph Training Center ITC).

Cline began teaching MicroStation training classes at both the University of Houston Main Campus and Downtown Campus in 1988. These classes were conducted in the evenings and were focused on adults who
were in need of education to change career paths and those just looking to further their knowledge of the blossoming CAD industry. It was during this time that Cline was exposed to Autodesk's AutoCAD application and individuals who were knowledgeable in it's functions and application to design workflows.

In 1990 Cline accepted a position at the phenomenally successful Compaq Computer Corporation as a CAD Applications Analyst. Cline's primary role was to participate in benchmark testing of three primary 3D solid modeling
applications available at that time (Pro/Engineer, CATIA, Intergraph). Ultimately Pro/Engineer was selected due to it's features (like assemblies), ease of use and add on modules (like sheet metal folding patterns).
Many of the people involved in this project went on to author books on the Pro/Engineer modeling application. Most notably are James Utz and Robert Cox who authored Inside Pro/Engineer(ISBN 978-1566901789).
Cline authored a companion work entitled the Pro/Engineer Quick Reference Guide (ISBN 978-1566900362). Both were published in 1993 by OnWord Press. During this time Cline continued participating in local and national IGUG events. This led to numerous meetings with Keith, Barry, Ray and Greg Bentley (with Cline eventually joining Bentley Systems in the fall of 1993).

Cline spent one year at the Bentley office in Houston, TX working with Tom Bell & Rebecca Ward. In 1994 Cline relocated to Bentley's headquarters in Exton, PA as the Technical Manager, Sales Support. In this role Cline recruited and managed a group of 16 application engineers. Cline travelled extensively for Bentley going to such places as Norway, Australia, England and several European countries. Working directly with the development, technical support and training teams at Bentley allowed Cline to further his knowledge of Bentley applications such as MicroStation, TeamMate (the predecessor of ProjectWise). It was the exposure to MicroStation TeamMate and ProjectWise that sparked Cline's interest in learning more about Engineering Document Management technologies.
