Vissumo

Vissumo is a touchscreen innovation and licensing company headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah that specializes in force panel technology.
History
Vissumo (formerly InfiniTouch) was first developed in the research labs at QSI Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah. Originally the work of Jim Elwell, David Soss, and other engineers, the force sensor technology was developed, patented, and commercialized in 2006. Vissumo was unveiled to the public at the 2007 Society for Information Display Trade Show in Long Beach, California. In 2008 the Vissumo development group moved to new offices in North Salt Lake, UT.
Technology
Vissumo screens are based on force panel technology—using the force of a touch to determine its location and pressure on a screen. The concept was originally pioneered by IBM in the 1960s, but further advanced by the Vissumo development team. Vissumo uses a system of four strain gauge sensors in the corners of a panel area that sense the force of a touch and locate the X and Y coordinates. Unique characteristics of this technology include the fact that a touch panel can be constructed of any rigid material—glass, metal, plastic, wood, etc.—or a combination of materials. Additionally, the panel may be elevated, irregular, and contain surface attachments and/or penetrations. These characteristics make Vissumo panels very durable and generally limitless in construction possibilities.
