Visiondirect.co.uk is a popular online retailer of optical goods and eye wear, primarily contact lenses. The webshop has a significant market share in the UK, but also delivers worldwide. The company's headquarters are in Amsterdam, Netherlands but also have UK offices in London and York.
Due to the de-regulation of the optical industry, starting in 1980's UK retail market for spectacles and related services, a barrier to trade was removed. Subsequently, Visiondirect.co.uk was founded in 1998 [https://plus.google.com/+VisiondirectCoUk/posts/ and is one of the largest UK Opticians.
Historically, UK optical retailers had to verify each prescription prior to an online sale, but legal developments have transferred liability for obtaining a valid prescription over to the user. There has been some controversy with regards to public health risks regarding deregulating contact lens e-commerce, but the European court of justice ruled in favor of promoting free movement of goods. Consequently, consumers shopping for contact lenses in the EU are no longer required to submit their prescriptions prior to every sale (unless there are specific reasons for the seller to request it).
In February 2014 GetLenses acquired VisionDirect and Lensbase to strengthen their European position.
