Vision Magazine

Vision Magazine (ISSN-0042-692X) is the official independent student publication of the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture. It is the longest-running publication for architecture, design, and the arts in the Philippines and the first collegiate journal for architecture in the country. Vision Magazine is registered worldwide with the Centre International de l'ISSN in Bachaumont, Paris, France. As the core paper of the country’s largest and premier architecture school for almost 50 years, Vision has been known for its interesting and comprehensive articles. Its pages have printed the first bylines and taglines of future titans in architecture, the artworks and photos of future maestros in the arts, and the writings of future movers & shakers in the industry.
Its editorial board consists of competent and qualified students, who share a common interest in architecture, journalism, photography, and graphic design, under the mentorship of architect and author Rino Fernandez. Vision Magazine has its editorial and production offices located at A4Con, Beato Angelico Bldg., UST, España, Manila.
Vision Magazine is a special-interest serial publication with readers consisting mainly of students and faculty of the College of Architecture. However, it also sends copies to architecture schools and universities nationwide and abroad. Aside from schools, Vision Magazine copies also reach local and international architecture firms, companies, and professional organizations. Aside from the usual news, heritage, profile, technology, design, and commentary section of the magazine, Vision also publishes the outstanding studio works and theses of UST architecture students. As a legitimate member of the campus press in the Philippines, Vision Magazine is entitled to its rights and protection under Republic Act 7071 otherwise known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991. Among its illustrious roster of alumni are writers and architects like Arch. Felino Palafox and Arch. Jojo Tolentino who are now distinguished experts in their respective fields.
Brief history
In 1964, the Colegio de Bellas Artes y Arquitectura (College of Architecture and Fine Arts or CAFA) through the efforts of BFA Painting student Jaime De Guzman established an independent publication that will feature outstanding plates of the CAFA students. The publication was named Vision Magazine. The purpose of the publication is to chronicle the general direction of the arts viewed from the students’ perspective and manifested in their works. It was in 1965, the year after, when the very first issue of the magazine was released. Since then on, year after year and despite constant time and budget constraints, Vision Magazine survived and became the college’s documented history of its collection of the best works done by the students.
In 2001, the separation of the two departments of the College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA) brought Vision Magazine’s production to a halt. But on the second deanship of architect Augusto Concio in 2003, the magazine was revived and, with the concurrence of Fine Arts dean Jaime Delos Santos, was reformatted into a collegiate architectural magazine that features more student-written articles. Since then, every issue follows a specific theme - Urbanism, Present Culture and Trends, Sports and Sensous, Travel and Leisure, Institutions, Go Green, and Heroism - released consecutively. Meanwhile, the College of Fine Arts and Design put up its separate publication under the banner Hiraya, which is the Filipino translation of the word Vision.
In 2006, Patrick Dela Cuesta, then Editor-in-chief, established The Visionary—an annual supplementary issue that will catalogue outstanding design plates, models, and theses of the students. The Visionary continues the tradition of the old Vision Magazine. In 2007, the maiden issue of The Visionary was released.
Vision Magazine’s website is designed to speak to architecture students, professionals, and enthusiasts about the latest trends and pressing issues in architecture and at the same time keeping them informed of the hottest news and happenings in the Philippine’s premier architecture school. Aside from the usual preview of what’s inside the printed issue, this website also offers web exclusives such as the online portfolio of the studio works and theses of our design students, and the Fotovision, a gallery of striking architectural photos and images. It also provides downloadable versions of the magazine’s back issues.
