Vipulroy Rathod

Dr. Vipulroy Dayanand Rathod (born 13 May 1964 in Navsari, Gujarat, India) is a gastroenterologist and endoscopist in clinical practice in Mumbai since 2000. Being the pioneer of Interventional Pancreato-Billiary EUS and having performed more than 18,000 EUS Procedures and over 35,000 diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopic procedures has earned him the distinction of the largest individual experience in advanced endoscopy in the Indian subcontinent. He is the first Indian Endoscopist to be awarded a Fellowship of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE).
Education and career
After completing his M.B.B.S. at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in Gujarat, India in 1988 and his MS in general surgery in 1992, he went to Germany as a clinical fellow and trainee in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and endosonography at the Department of Endoscopic Surgery of University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany under Prof. Nib Soehendra and Dr. Kenneth Binmoeller. In 1998, he performed the first ever interventional endosonographic procedure in India and pioneered diagnostic and interventional endosonographic ultrasound in this part of the world.
During his career in Mumbai that spans almost two decades, Rathod has performed more than 18,000 EUS procedures including more than 8500 interventional EUS procedures apart from over 35,000 various diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures. His vast experience in advanced therapeutic ERCP has complimented his EUS skills in diagnosis, for desired clinical outcomes. He has found the role of combined approach of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and ERCP to be of great value in patients with acute, recurrent acute and chronic pancreatitis apart from pancreatic tumors. Rathod is recognised as one of the world leaders in endoscopic ultrasound and has represented India in over 50 countries as international faculty, speaker and demonstrator in leading gastroenterology and endoscopy conferences and workshops. In 2006, he was invited as a visiting professor at Yale University, New Haven, US and was also awarded a fellowship as Fellow of American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FASGE) for outstanding contribution in the field of Endoscopy.
Rathod is the promoter and director of Endoscopy Asia which was inaugurated in 2008 by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev of Isha Foundation. . In July 2013, Rathod set a record for the first-of-its-kind giant polypoidal lesion measuring 8 cm x 2.5 cm endoscopically without any form of surgical intervention.
In 2015, he was appointed the secretary of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI) and he also founded World Gastroenterology Institute in Mumbai which is the first and only dedicated hospital for gastrointestinal diseases in western India.
Rathod has trained over 350 aspiring gastroenterologists and endoscopists and more than 75 international fellow gasteroenterologists from as far as the US, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Philippines, Slovakia, Syria, UAE, Oman, Iran, Libya, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia and South Africa He is held in high regard in the Indian society and respected as an exemplary role model for the youth in his field.

Dr. Rathod Medical Foundation
Under the Dr. Rathod Medical Foundation, Rathod extends a philanthropic approach to all the needy and underprivileged patients to have access to world-class service. Dr. Rathod Medical Foundation works with the belief that nobody should be deprived of the best of healthcare and that these services are made available to all who require it. 40% of the work done is charity through the foundation for this segment of patients. The foundation encourages fellowships and provides stipends for young doctors who aspire to learn and further train in the field of gastroenterology hepatology and endoscopy.
Endoscopy Guru
Rathod has conducted over eight hands-on well structured courses in endoscopy. The last course in December 2012 brought together the pioneering masters in the field of endoscopy. Dr. Laurent Palazzo from France, Dr. Peter Vilmann from Denmark and Dr. Haruhiro Inoue from Japan. This course also saw the launch of India's first online educational portal in gastroenterology called Endoscopy Guru through which he conducts free live webinars and classes for doctors across the world to educate them in timely diagnosis and treatment.
Gastrovision
A monthly newsletter called Gastrovision that contains case capsules and discussions is an initiative of and supported by Dr. Rathod Medical Foundation. It is mailed to more than 15,000 doctors across India and is also available for free download so as to raise an awareness of various diseases, complications and treatment protocols to doctors and to overall uplift the quality of healthcare in gastrointestinal services.
Personal life
Rathod lives in Mumbai with his wife Purnima who is the director of Endoscopy Asia and actively involved with the non-profit spiritual organization Isha Foundation. They have two daughters Natashja Rathore who is a film director and Rytasha Rathore who is an actor.

Rathod has more than 25 articles and abstracts published in national and international journals of endoscopy.
