Vilelie Khamo

Vilelie Khamo (born February 14, 1960), is a Naga Contractor who owns Vilelie Khamo & Sons, the largest construction company in Nagaland.
Early life
Vilelie Khamo was born on 14 February 1960 to Melhoutso Khamo and Lechale Khamo of Mima, Kohima District. He was the youngest of the seven brothers and seven sisters in his family. His parents were farmers but later joined government service in Kohima.
After his father joined the government service, they had to move to Kohima where he did some petty household chores at the Director's residence, where his father worked. He later joined . After his master got transferred he could not continue his studies as his source of income was only from his master. He then went back to Mima and studied Class-IV. There he continued to make money by trading clay marbles to hunters Re. 1 per 1000 marbles and made Rs. 2 and also by selling Kerosenes
Later Khamo bought himself a truck for Rs. 45000. He soon found the business of cars used as taxis to be profitable. So he bought an ambassador through a bank loan. It was during this time where he had the opportunity to chauffer the then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi in his car who came down to Kohima to lay the Foundation Stone of the Indira Gandhi Stadium. Many years later he would become the very contractor who would complete the construction of the stadium.
Career
As his exposure and influence grew, it was on June 13, 1983 where his fate came to a turning point as Executive Engineer, Y. Chuba Ao, PWD, South Division, Kohima, awarded him a small contract work of Rs. 6642 for constructing a 900 mm dia RCC Hume Pipe culvert at 5.20 km on Kigwema-Mima-Chakhabama road. Er. Y. Chuba Ao was so impressed by his work and sincerity and he rewarded him with more works of Rs. 14000. It was this starting event where he earned a well deserved Class-1 Contractor in the year 1988.
