Veeran Azhagumuthu Kone

Veeran AzhaguMuthu Kone (1681-1739) was the first freedom fighter in India.
He was an Indian revolutionary and independence activist. He is regarded for having raised one of the first revolts against the British East India Company in India.
Kone belonged to a Tamil Konar (Yadav) family and was born and brought up in Kattalankulam, a village in erstwhile Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He served as “Servaikarar” (meaning 'commander or captain of the military’, not belongs to Servai Caste) to the Ettayapuram Palaiyakkarar Jagaveera Ramapandian. He gained the “Servaikarar” Title from “Thirumalai Nayakar” of Madurai by proving his Bravery.
In the 1739 over the 100 years before the “Sepoy Mutiny” in North India,
Veeran AzhaguMuthu Kone the rebel leader was captured with his 248 bodyguards at Perunaalli Forests by Yusuf Khan (Marutha Nayagam) and mercilessly killed by blowing him from the Mouth of cannon.
AzhaguMuthu Kone came to limelight in 1962 through a Communist magazine ”Thamarai”(Lotus).In the Tamil Nadu State Legislature on 29.04.1994 the government announced to celebrate annually by the Govt, in Tirunelveli the memory of Veeeran AzhaguMuthu Kone.
It was done for the year 1995. Then the government named a Transport Corporation with headquarters at Pudukottai and Government buses were operated with the name "Veeeran AzhaguMuthu Kone Transport Corporation" on 15.03.1996. On the same day (15.03.1996) a very big bronze statue of Veeran AzhaguMuthu erected by the government near Madras Egmore Railway station. The statue was opened by Hon. Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalitha under the president ship of Thiru S. Kannappan Minster for PWD, Highways and Electricity.
