Variations of Settlers of Catan

Since the creation of Settlers of Catan, many variations were created by people who just love the game. Fan supplied scenarios and variants are not sanctioned by the designer or Mayfair Games, however, Mayfair Games places this information on their own website for player enjoyment.

Many Variations are are as simple as adding a few rules. However, some go so far as to require new Hex-Shaped Pieces, Square Cards, or Tokens. For some of these, Mayfair Games supplies images to freely print and reproduce in addition to providing the rules. For this reason, it is generally accepted that reproduction and distribution of fan made variations do not violate any laws.

Detailed Description of Variations

While this article is still a work in progress, this would be a good place to briefly detail the physical variations that exist.

Computer Related Variations

In addition to Fan Made Variations to the Physical Board Game, Computer Programs have been created. Some programs are written by large corporations, such as Microsoft, and have officially licensed the name of the game to use for this purpose. Other programs are written by private persons, either for educational or recreation reasons and are released Open-Source. These programs typically avoid using the name "Settlers of Catan" or any official rules or art work so as to avoid copyright infringement. Regardless, they are still important contributions to mention.
