Vancouver falcons athletics club

The Vancouver Falcons Athletics Club began in 1987, as a way to offer not only weekly coaching, but create challenging goals to overcome in a friendly and supportive environment. Many members are encouraged to attend the weekly training sessions, held by a long-time running coach, John Hill. Each member is given a personal training schedule, designed to specifically target their weaknesses, in order to improve upon them. Although these training sessions are filled with hard work, members do enjoy one another's company with regular trips to restaurants together.
Chris Brandt is president of the Vancouver Falcons Athletics Club, while John Hill is the official coach. Hill is the individual who foresees training exercises, aids in improving members running performances, as well as maintains a positive environment that is bound to help produce exceptional running abilities. Drafted into the BC Athletics Hall of Fame, John Hill became a professional in the sport of running through 36 years of competitive running and coaching. A winner of the Vancouver Marathon of 1978, as well as obtaining a minor degree in Kinesiology at Simon Frasier University and being a fully certified Level II coach, John Hill has aided VFAC in numerous ways.

Membership
As a member, one must show up on time, as to avoid wasting valuable time. Respect and courteous behaviours are necessary in order to maintain a positive environment - one where other members feel optimistic and encouraged to improve upon their running abilities. Members are also encouraged to keep their club and coaching fees, as well as their contact information up to date, so as to not become disorganized. Lastly, it is required that members volunteer at both races, the Dave Reed Spring Classic 5K and the Summerfast 10K Road Race. If a member wishes to run at either of these races, an outside volunteer must be present to replace this spot.
Races
VFAC anchors two main races, the Dave Reed Spring Classic 5K and the Summerfast 10K Road Race. One of VFAC’s most known races, The Dave Reed Spring Classic 5k, features a flat course beginning and ending at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park, with a moderately clear path along the Seawall. The Dave Reed Spring Classic 5k began in 2008, in memory of the late Dave Reed (1954-2008), a dedicated local runner who unfortunately passed away due to a staph infecton. Dave Reed was notoriously well-known among his running companions as being the epitome of the Sport. The Summerfast 10k Road Race, as of right now is entering into it’s 25th year, and features another flat course through Stanley Park and along the Seawall, beginning at Ceperley Picnic Area at Second Beach.
Both races feature chip timing, provided by RaceOnline. Food is provided upon finishing the race, with free healthy snacks including fruit and baked goods along with beverages.
Medals are provided to the top three runners in each age category. Other prizes and merchandise giveaways are awarded to the winner of each age category, while draw prizes allow each runner a chance to win something.
The Vancouver Falcons Athletics Club enters teams for relay races as well, situated in British Columbia, Alberta and Oregon.
Sponsors
Both races are given permission by BC Road Running, affiliated with BC Athletics. Both races are sponsored by the Running Room, a store dedicated for runners, in the form of running shoes and apparel. The Dave Reed Spring Classic 5K and the Summerfast 10k Road Race support Centered Lifestyle, a service wishing to provide professional care for children, youth and families in need of a balanced life.
Others sponsors for the Vancoucer Falcons Athletics club include Forerunners, Tim Hortons, Donnelly Group Public Houses, The Run Inn, Brooks, Whole Foods Market, Starbucks, Clif Bar, Canadian Springs, Sierra Sil, Human Kinetics, BC Athletics, Lower Mainland Road Race Series, and RaceOnline. These races not only support Centered Lifestyle, but Shoe4Africa as well.
