Van Pope (born February 26, 1984 in Jackson, Mississippi) is a minor league baseball relief pitcher in the Atlanta Braves farm system. Listed at 6-feet and 200 pounds, Pope bats and throws right-handed. Entering 2007, he was rated by Baseball America as the No. 5 prospect in the Braves organization. He currently plays for the Triple-A Gwinnett Braves. Pope became a Minor League free agent at the end of the 2009 season and the Braves re-signed him with one caveat: he would have to become a pitcher. After getting a late start, he joined Myrtle Beach's bullpen near the end of April and his pitching career went about as well as his hitting career. In 9 appearances for the Pelicans he was 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA and a 2.12 WHIP. He was repeatedly undone by wildness, walking 12.7 per 9 innings, hitting 2 batters, and balking twice. The Braves released Pope in May 2010. While he was willing to give pitching a try, Pope remained skeptical of it and now that he's been released he will look to continue his career with a different organization as a third baseman.
