Unreal Tournament 3 Online Multiplayer Activities and Community

Unreal Tournament 3 is primarily an online multiplayer game. Consequently, the game benefits from having an extensive online community. The UT3 community manifests itself in the form of discussion forums, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels, and voice-over-IP servers, many of which are interrelated and associated with actual UT3 gaming servers. Several websites and discussion forums also serve as communities for custom map and game mod designers. Although most activity occurs on public servers, several people also choose to play in clan matches and pickup game matches.

Clans and Clan Matches
A clan is an organized team of players that plays scheduled matches against other clans. Clans are often members of organized leagues that take the form of ladders where clans attempt to climb to the top of their ladders by challenging clans above them while defending against challenges from clans on lower rungs.

Pickup Game (PUG) Matches
A PUG match is a spontaneously organized clan match-style game with teams composed of random players and not formal rosters. PUG matches are organized in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels where players sign up to play in the next match. When enough people have signed up, two of the players become team captains and draft the other players for their teams, often in a 1-2-2-1 order for 4-on-4 Team Deathmatch and in a 1-2-2-2-1 order for 5-on-5 Capture the Flag, with the first captain choosing the first player and the second captain picking the next two players, etc. The players then join a voice communications server, such as a Teamspeak or a Ventrillo server, and then they join a password-protected PUG match server where they play a best of three maps match. Like a regular clan match, players often have assigned positions and try to use teamwork. For example, common CTF positions are flag defense, offense, middle, and front door defense.
