X Operations is a first person shooter developed by TEAM MITEI and is commonly referred to as Xops
Background The game's official name is X Operations, but is often abbreviated as "Xops" for both single-player and multi-player modes.
The setting of the game is a modern world in which the player takes on a series of 58 missions with different objectives for each. The player accomplishes each mission with a varying arsenal of weaponry under one of many predetermined characters. These players range from police officers to civilians, from military personnel to Special Operations soldiers.
X Operations is a completely free FPS available for download from several different websites
Gameplay Multi-player Online play is available through the internet and may be hosted by individual player servers. While there are often servers that are hosted around the clock, there is no dedicated server so it is not always possible to play online. Multi-player gameplay is performed as a series of skirmishes between the Red Team and Blue Team with up to 6 persons per team depending on the server specifications. The server randomly and evenly divides the players into the Red and Blue Teams at the beginning of each round, and while no damage will be taken by friendly gunfire, grenades will cause damage to both friendly and enemy players. There are 15 playable multi-player maps, which after dying, may be viewed by the player under a free-roaming camera perspective or to watch other players still battling. File size is extremely small so is very portable around 3 - 4 mb for online version just plug and play anywhere.
Combat, a mod of XOps is also commonly played, though in order to join a server hosting Combat one must download this separate executable file and then replace some files of xops1.8 with the downloaded files. Combat follows the same rules as standard XOps play, but hosts multiple other maps which are updated on a regular basis.
Single-player
Xops0.96, or single-player X Operations, consists of a variety of maps and mission objectives. Enemies are operated by the computer and are commonly referred to as "bots."
Missions are based on the following criteria: *EXT: Exterminate; search for and kill all enemy personnel *KT: Kill Target; assassinate a designated target *DEF: Defend; Defend a target against assassination *ESC: Escape; Stay alive while evading enemy characters and attempting to reach a set check point *DE: Destroy; Destroy a target, usually inanimate (ie: a computer) *RE: Release; Release a target and proceed to defend the target while eliminating all enemy personnel *CAP: Capture; Capture a target, usually inanimate (ie: a briefcase)
There is no designated time limit for any mission though certain missions, usually KT or DEF, must be completed before the criteria are made impossible (ie: target escapes, target is killed, etc.).
Additional Missions In addition to the standard single-player maps and missions, additional maps and missions may be downloaded and then copied into the addon folder in the directory C:\ \Xops\Single_Player\addon.
These missions follow the same mission objectives (EXT, RE, etc.) as the standard missions but take place on a variety of different player created maps. Most of these are single missions, but some were created in a series of episodes following a story. Additional maps are available for download from several X Operations related websites.
Weapons Arsenal
X Operations makes use of real world firearms. All Xops weapons have a limited amount of ammunition and cannot be replenished by finding a similar weapon as in other FPS games. One must drop the weapon he is currently handling in order to pick up a new weapon, even if they are the same type of firearm.
Characters X Operations involves nearly 30 different characters though weapons and equipment carried by each character vary from map to map. Some characters have different model types, one that may wear sunglasses, another that may not, etc.
Team MITEI TEAM MITEI is the developer of X Operations and is composed of two Japanese game and graphics designers known only as "nine-two" and "TENNKUU" . The motive for their creation of Xops was as a test for further development of future games.
