The University of Washington Hong Kong Student Association Singing Contest (also known as SingCon) is an annual singing contest held by the University of Washington's Hong Kong Student organization since 2003. It is the flagship event organized by the HKSA student organization and one of the largest events, both by size and publicity, among all student organizations at the University of Washington. Hong Kong Student Association The Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) is a student organization at the University of Washington and was established in 1984. The organization mainly focuses on the culture of Cantonese-speaking regions in Hong Kong and China, including Macau and Guangdong. The HKSA serves to promote Hong Kong culture and heritage to general students and also provide a place for Cantonese students to interact with each other. History The event started as a karaoke singing contest. After gaining notability it grew to a full concert performance, leading to the establishment of the logo name SingCon. ;2014 :In the 10th Anniversary of HKSA SingCon last year, Andrew Garcia (one of the American Idol top ten finalists) was invited to perform as the headline artist. The champion of SingCon 2014 had an opportunity to work with Andrew Garcia on a collaboration project. ;2013 :SingCon collaborated with the Chinese Information and Service Center (CISC) to put on the show and all profits from SingCon 2013 were donated to CISC to raise awareness of the minorities. Hong Kong singer and actor Jason Chan was invited as the highlighted guest. :YesStyle and YesAsia jointly sponsored SingCon 2013. There are raffle during the show and tickets to SingCon 2013 were given away to YesAsia and YesStyle fans on Twitter. ;2012 :SingCon in 2012 featured international guest artist MC Jin and Seattle hip-hop artist Gowe. SingCon Format ;Auditions :Open to all participants in greater Seattle area, not limited to college students. Each contestant is required to sing a song of their choice to the SingCon judges. 20-30 contestants will be selected into the elimination round. ;Elimination round : Similar to the auditions, contestants will present a song. They will be given a score based on their performance; the 8 contestants with the highest will enter the final. ;Final showdown : There are 3 rounds of competition in the final showdown. In round 1, each contestant will perform a solo. Round 2, contestants will be paired up for a duet performance. Score will be given after each round of the competition. Top 3 finalist with the highest scores, accumulated from the elimination onwards, will enter round 3 for showdown. The 3 will get the last chance to fight for the highest overall score so as to secure the SingCon championship.
