University of North Dakota Greek Life

History
Greek Life has thrived at the University of North Dakota since the early 1900s. It was popularized by the first men's organization, the Varsity Bachelor's Club. The Varsity Bachelor Club was founded in 1902 by ten University of North Dakota students, led by William Lemke, describing themselves as "turned-down, heart-pierced young men.". The Varsity Bachelors Club was the both the first men's organization to be recognized by the university administration, and the first campus organization to own its own house. The club later gained a charter and became the North Dakota Alpha chapter of Phi Delta Theta in 1913. Two other women's organizations were founded in the early 1900s, the Alpha Delta's, and the Pi Kappa Chi Club. These two organizations would later become Kappa Alpha Theta and Alpha Phi, the first greek women's organizations chartered in 1911. Now, University of North Dakota is home to many social, academic, and honors organizations.
