Underground following

An underground following is a group of people who are fans of some sort of underground or indepependant band, musical project, film, director, etc.


In Music
There have been many underground bands. Sometimes underground bands leave the underground in favor of a larger, more pop-culture oriented fanbase. This is often reffered too as a "Breakthrough, as in "a brreakthrough album." One example of a breakthrough album would be Nirvana's Nevermind in 1992. Often, bands with an underground following will be called "Indie bands," but the terms are not always used the same.

In Film
Many independant films have garnered an underground following. A common term for a film which has attracted an underground following, it is called a "Cult film," and it's fans "Cult following." Well known examples of underground films are Eraserhead, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Clerks., and The Blair Witch Project.
