The UNC Wilmington Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Systems (MS CSIS) is a graduate degree offered jointly by the Computer Science department in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Information Systems & Operations Management department in the Cameron School of Business at University of North Carolina Wilmington. The MS CSIS program is in the family of Professional Science Masters (PSM) programs, which combine aspects of Science and Business. History The MS CSIS program was designed with extensive input from regional IT professionals.The MS CSIS program admitted its first students in the Fall of 2005. Fourteen (14) students were admitted in the first academic (2005-2006) year. Curriculum This program aligns closely with the general category of Master of Science in Information Systems degrees. The MS CSIS program consists of three main requirements: # Core Courses # Elective Courses # Capstone The Core Courses are a set of 3-credit hour courses, half taught by Computer Science (CSC) faculty, and half taught by Information Systems (MIS) faculty: * Software Engineering (CSC) * Computer Algorithms (CSC) * Network Programming (CSC) * Analysis, Modeling and Design (MIS) * Information Security Management (MIS) * Database Management Systems (MIS) Four elective courses are required. Electives can be made up of standard course offerings, directed independent studies, seminar courses, or internship experiences. The Capstone is a six-credit-hour project or theses on a topic of student choice. The capstone is supervised by a Capstone Chairperson and two other graduate faculty. Prerequisites Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program, students must complete undergraduate pre-requisites from Computer Science, Business, and Information Systems. These prerequisites include: * An introductory Computer programming course * An intermediate Computer programming course * A course in Data structures * A course in networking, Telecommunications, or network programming * A course in Database * A course in Systems analysis or Software engineering * A course in Marketing * A course in management * A course in accounting * A course in finance Typical students with an undergraduate Computer Science degree usually must complete the marketing, management, accounting, and finance courses. Typical students with an undergraduate Information Systems degree from a business school usually must complete additional programming and data structures courses.
