uLesson Education Limited is an education technology business headquartered in Jos,, Nigeria whose mission is to provide high-quality, affordable, and accessible education to African learners by leveraging all available media and technology tools.
The company, which was founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Sim Shagaya in 2019 has built an app that hosts pre-recorded educational video lessons, which are delivered by experts in education. The lessons are delivered as short video formats and include the use of digital animation and illustration as a means of explaining complex concepts as well as helping students learn in a more fun and engaging way.
Product and Service
uLesson officially launched its main product, the uLesson App, in March 2020. The service currently targets students in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. The app offers Senior Secondary School students in these countries curriculum-tailored lessons in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and for Junior Secondary School students, lessons in Mathematics, Business Studies, Basic Science and Basic Technology. The company plans to introduce new subjects such as English in August 2020.
The uLesson app aims at delivering better learning outcomes and improving performance on national and regional tests such as WAEC, NECO, BECE, GCE. and others. The app features over 8 years of past WAEC exam questions with detailed solutions; making it a useful tool for students to prepare for WAEC exams. Timed practice WAEC exams available on the app also helps students to become familiar with WAEC exam format, assess their preparedness and time management skills.
The app has a free model that allows non-subscribers to view a limited number of video lessons while paid subscribers have access to the complete library of lessons.
The company plans to introduce Live Lessons where students can schedule classes and interact with tutors in real time. Another proposed feature is a Question and Answer feature where learners can send in questions in form of images or text and have detailed solutions would be sent back to them by expert lesson teachers. The Company also intends to introduce a web version of the app in coming months.
Funding
In November 2019, uLesson announced that it successfully raised a $3.1 million seed round led by TLcom Capital. It further disclosed in April 2020 that it secured new investment from Founder Collective, but did not disclose the amount. The money raised however was part of uLesson’s seed funding round.
