U.S. State Names: The Stories of How Our States Were Named
|
U.S. State Names is a reference book published in 2009 by author Kathy Guyton. The book tells the stories of how each state in the United States was named, taking them each alphabetically and telling them as a story. The book differs from many reference books on state names by giving in detail the history of the name, other possibilities for naming that particular state, competing theories about the etymology of the name, interesting stories that may have occurred in the naming process, and legislative discussions and arguments that might have ensued. The publication of the book was announced by the author's home town newspaper, The Mountain Ear, with an article by Barbara Lawlor. Author Kathy Guyton was also interviewed about the book on the Fox affiliate, KTBC, in Austin, Texas. The book's unique format was noted in a review by the Boulder Daily Camera's Clay Evans, "state by state, she stretches name origins into concise, fascinating history lessons about each state." U.S. State Names was published by Mountain Storm Press in Nederland, Colorado in the United States.
