U. R. Lalit

U. R. Lalit is a senior counsel practising at Supreme Court of India and a former additional judge of the Bombay High Court, Nagpur bench. After his retirement, on 6 February 1976, he was designated as a senior counsel by the Supreme Court of India. He is father of Uday U. Lalit, judge of Supreme Court of India.
Legal Career
Justice Lalit was appointed as an additional judge at the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court. As a lawyer, he primarily practicsed criminal law. to three minor boys charged with offences similar to sedition for being in possession of 48 leaflets. These leaflets carried report of the speech by Mohan Dharia, a member of the Lok Sabha condemning the emergency. This judgment was cited as a precendent in magistrates' courts and helped to secure the release of many a dissenter. Due to his "anti-executive judicial decisions" during the imposed during Indira Gandhi government, in January 1976, Gandhi refused to extend his tenure as a high court judge. This was despite favourable recommendations from the then law minister and the Chief Justice of the High Court.<ref name=":0" />
