Tunnesons Ointment is a pharmaceutical compound used for dry, flaky skin, most commonly in infant and pediatric patients. It consists of lactic acid 1%, phenol 0.2%, menthol 0.2% and hydrocortisone 1%. Its moisturizing effects is due to several different mechanisms based on the various ingredients. Lactic acid is a humectant and acts as a keratin softening agent by reducing epidermal keratinization. Aquaphor is a petrolatum base and its properties as an emollient works synergistically with the humectant properties of lactic acid as humectants draw water in to hydrate the epidermis while emollients retain water that is already present in the skin.
