Time Spent Driving

Time Spent Driving was an American Indie/Emo Rock band from Santa Cruz, California that existed from 1999 to 2003. Founding members included Jon Cattivera (Vocals/Guitar, formerly of Fury 66 and Reliance), Derek Pabich (Guitar, formerly of Reliance), Todd Archibald (Bass, formerly of Black Label) and Kem Gallione (Drums.)
The name came about because Jon wrote some of the lyrics for the band's first songs while driving (Patterson Pass, Your Arms The Blades, etc).
The band recorded their first material in 2000, a self-titled 3-song demo CD, at House of Faith studios in Oakland, CA with Bart Thurber. The demo featured "Balance", "Your Arms, The Blades" and "Patterson Pass". The band played their first show in Feb. of 2000 at the Drop-In Center (Santa Cruz, CA) with The Wunder Years and Ellis.
The band signed on to put out their first CDEP, "Walls Between Us", with Unfun Records (Saratoga, CA), which was released in November 2000. They supported the release by playing shows throughout the West Coast and then touring Germany with Favez.
With little support by Unfun, the band switched to Sessions Records and rereleased the CDEP and also signed with the label to record a full-length record. The CDEP was rereleased with greater distribution, and Chesnut Cafe Records out of Germany also put out the EP in a 10' vinyl version released in Europe as an import Jan. 2002.
The band put out a 3-way split 7" with Scott Ritcher and Favez called "Thin Like Paper" on Doghouse Records.
"Lowlight" was recorded exclusively for the Deep Elm compilation "The Emo Diaries Chapter 7: Me Against the World".
"Dear Shannon" was recorded exclusively for a compilation CD called "Voice this Sound" (Inverse Records).
The band recorded their first full length "Just Enough Bright" for Sessions Records in 2002. The album was recorded and produced by J. Robbins (Burning Airlines, Jawbox) at Tiny Telephone studios in San Francisco, California.
Many of the band's songs could be heard on the Amped Snowboarding games for the Microsoft Xbox, as well as in the background on popular MTV reality shows, "Sorority Life" and "Fraternity Life."
Over the span of their career, the band toured rigorously including dates all over the US sharing stages with acts such as Pop Unknown, Sunday's Best, Mock Orange, Counterfit, Benton Falls, Scott Ritcher, Promise Ring, Liars Academy, Fairweather, The Honor System, Dredg, Gameface, Velvet Teen, Casket Lottery, Rocky Votolato and many more.
After original member Todd Archibald left the band, they were notorious for having bass player problems, which led Jon Cattivera to write and record all bass tracks on "Just Enough Bright." Several bass players filled the slot throughout the years including James Findlay, Keith Brinkley (ex-Sloe) and Jon Jamieson (of Jetlag).
The band broke up in 2003, with a brief reunion in 2005 adding Jesse Buglione (of Lagwagon) on bass. The band recorded 7 new songs at Compound Recordings with this line-up, which can be found on their final release "I'm Your Stab in the Back" (2007 - Lorelei Records), which also features rare, live and unreleased material.
Jon Cattivera and Kem Gallione now play in Gentlemen of Japan. Jon also played in Crucial Unicorn after Time Spent Driving disbanded, and previously played in Fury 66, Reliance and Illiterate. Jon is also the owner and lead designer at Sleepless Media, a web design company based in Santa Cruz, California.
