Throw In Records

* Former Tranmere defender Dave Challinor holds the world record for the longest ever throw, his effort at Prenton Park in 1998 being measured at 46.34 metres.
* Perhaps, though, the most famous of all long throw specialists is Stoke's Rory Delap's. During Yhe 2008/09 season his enourmous throws, fired with a flat trajectory, caused huge problems for Stoke's opponents and led to a number of vital goals for the Potters.
* The most bizarre goal from a throw in came in a derby between Birningham City and Aston Villa in 2002. Villa defender Olaf Mellberg threw the ball back to the goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, and it dribbled under his foot and into the net. Despite Villa's protests, referee David Elleray ruled that goal should stand because Enckelman made contact with the ball.
* Throw ins were replaced by kick ins from the touchline in the Diadora League (now the Ryman League) during the 1994/95 season, but the experiment was abandoned at the end of the campaign.
