Shawn Tellus

Shawn Tellus (born 26 August 1983 in Sliema, Malta) is a professional footballer currently with Maltese Premier League side Marsaxlokk, he plays as a defender.
Tellus has primarily been used as a central defender throughout his career, but has also filled in as a right back when required.
Playing career
Sliema Wanderers
Shawn began his career with his local side Sliema Wanderers nursery, where he progressed up the ranks until he eventually made the first team setup, in his first season 2001-02, Tellus made three first team appearances and continued the following season of 2002-03, again making a further three appearances.
With first team chances hard to come by, Tellus was loaned out to Balzan Youths from January, 2003 until the end of that season, making 22 appearances for the first team and establishing himself as a first team regular, he even scored his first senior goal, in a 2-1 victory of Valletta.
Tellus returned to Sliema Wanderers following his successful loan spell in the hope of finally forcing himself into the first team setup, however Shawn made one further appearance for the club, he totaled seven appearances during his time with the club, but never scored a first team goal.
Marsaxlokk
Tellus set up a new chapter in his career when in November, 2004 he signed for Marsaxlokk. Shawn made his way into the first team squad and made 15 appearances in his first season, and even scored his first goal for the club.
At the beginning of his second season with the club, Shawn sustained a serious knee injury, which after an operation (arthroscopy lateral release) he was informed that he would be back playing first team football within two to three months, however Shawns season came to an end when his knee injury hit complications a week later and the wound became infected from the inside. Tellus had to have another three operations (arthroscopy wash out) and spent two months in hospital in recovery. The disappointing season came to an end, with the player making just three appearances.
With Shawn spending the whole pre-season injured, and all in all missing over a years worth of football while his knee/quad muscle recovered, he finally returned to training with Marsaxlokk during the 2006-07 season, and eventually into the first team. However Tellus struggled to make his way back into the squad, primerally due to Marsaxlokk making the purchases of some high quality players, who played in Shawns position like Luke Dimech and several foreigners. Despite this Tellus made five appearances during the season and was also a part of the title winning Marsaxlokk side.
With Shawn finally over his knee injury nightmare and Marsaxlokk losing the services of a few first team players, the Sliema born defender found himself back in the first team plans and would have made more appearances had it have not been for the partnership that Renato Conceição and Carlo Mamo had formed, Tellus made a total of nine appearances during the 2006-07 season, in which against the odds Marsaxlokk secured a second place finish and a place in the UEFA Cup.
Qormi
For the 2007-08 season, Tellus and Marsaxlokk team mate Reuben Gauci were allowed to join newly promoted side Qormi on a season long loan deal, in a bid for both players to regain match practice.
A few weeks later, both players were joined at their new club by another former Marsaxlokk team mate, in the shape of midfielder Chucks Nwoko, who joined from Sliema Wanderers. Nwoko had a spell alongside Tellus and Gauci at Marsaxlokk in 2006.
After a very difficult season for Qormi to retain Premier League status, Tellus helped the team having many excellent matchs till the last few games when Qormi confirmed they are not going to be relegated due to a win over Hamrun Spartans.
Dingli Swallows
For the 2009-10 season, Tellus was planning to remain with Marsaxlokk but due to some last minute decisions by the club Coach Paterick Curmi a week prior to the beginning of the League Tellus was advised that he was not in the coaches plans for the season. After spending the whole preseason with Marsaxlokk, Tellus decided to make a move on loan to Dingli Swallows which had just got promoted from first division. This was his only option since the clubs that were interested in him at the beginning of the preseason like Tarxien, Hamrun & Floriana had reinforced or got other new players after Marsaxlokk President refused a loan or transfer. Eventually Marsaxlokk got relegated due to a corruption case and Tellus retained Premier League status with Dingli Swallows, also Shawn was reunited with former Marsaxlokk defender Renato Conceição. It was a very difficult season for Dingli Swallows as due to financial reasons they didn’t strengthen the squad very much. After being promoted they retained most of there first division players and struggled through several matchs. Dingli also suffered from many injuries mostly effected by there three foreigners missing several matches. Dingli Swallows got relegated to first division at the end of season 2009-10.
Tellus extended his loan from Marsaxlokk to Dingli in the 2010-11 for another year playing in the Maltese First Division League.
Malta national U21
Shawn began playing for the Malta National U21 team in 2001 under coach Mark Miller when he still was a Sliema Wanderers Player and shortly before he signed his contract with Marsaxlokk.
Shawn managed to play in two editions of the U21 Uefa Championship consisting of 4 years starting his first match when he was only 18. Shawn’s first match was against Slovenia and continued playing for the following 4 years counting up to 23 caps playing against teams like
Cyprus, France, Sweden and other.
Finally Shawn played his last game for the U21 in 2005 against Hungary playing home, where he injured his knee that resulted in many complications and missed his last two games of the edition which would have made him the highest capped Maltese player that played International U21 Games.
