History
In the 1960s, the school was named after Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Horace M. Thorne, a North Middletown resident who was killed in World War II. In the school's main hallway is a display which includes photographs of Thorne, his Medal of Honor, and the original award citation.<ref name="bcn20100127"/>
The school was renovated in the 2000-2001 school year. A new media center and four science classrooms were added as part of the renovation project.
Thorne Middle School and Middletown School District received national attention in the fall of 2001 when its teachers went on strike for the second time in three years. The strike disrupted classes for several days, and hundreds of teachers were jailed. After the strike, many members of the union leadership stepped down. There has not been a strike since 2001.
