ThePact

ThePact is an upcoming crowdfunded, crowdsourced and crowdmarketed horror feature-length film. The entire creation process - from first script drafts to final editing stages - will be conducted in the open on the project’s website. The film’s audience can watch and participate in the film’s creation. The finished film will be released into the public domain under Creative Commons-licenses for file sharing and remixing.
ThePactProject’s project design and the film’s initial storyline was conceived by writer and director Henrik Sylvén and social media consultant Anders Sjöman.
ThePact will be the second feature from Henrik Sylvén who has previously directed Lovelife Of A Fat Thief . Executive producers are Per Janérus, Björn Carlström and Anders Sjöman. The film is being created by Per, Björn & Stefan Film. A “Director’s Cut”-version of the film is estimated in 2010. The film will then be available for anyone to remix and fileshare as they want, under Creative Commons-licenses.
Background
Moviemaker Henrik Sylvén had an idea for a horror movie. Communication consultant Anders Sjöman wanted to include the remix-culture into film making, building on open source, open innovation and Creative Commons-development. A core crew was formed, including producers Per Janérus and Björn Carlström, and project manager Anders Wilhelmson. The project found early corporate supporters in Swedish access provider Bredbandsbolaget and Swedish communication firm Springtime acted as the project’s incubator.
Plot summary
ThePact is a film about friendship and the horrific choice of accepting a demon into your body in order to save your life. The story is set in a small mid-western college, where Jamie, a 19-year-old sophomore, suffers from horrific visions of demons and murders. The nightmares grow in intensity until she is forced to seek help at the local hospital. She is surprised to find four other college students with the exact same visions. They become friends and conclude that the visions are an omen of something bad about to happen. Scared of what that might be, they form a Pact, promising to always be by each other’s side.
Production
The initial plans for ThePact where drawn during 2008. The project was supported by Bredbandsbolaget and Springtime and in 2009 a website was launched. Presently the visitors to the website can give their input on the script and participate in the development of the film.
Crowd collaboration
ThePact will be a crowdsourced, crowdfinanced and crowdmarketed feature film to come out of Sweden and to be filmed in Canada. New ways of communicating has opened for new ways to make films, which has attracted the interest of many independent filmmakers and filmmaking communities.
Throught crowdsourcing, the film meets its audience long before it is finished; the crowd is invited to give input to create a better product. Naturally, the crowd can use the film and its various parts to remix the story as they want, all under Creative Commons-licenses.
If people like the film idea, they can show it by donating or investing a small sum into the film, called crowdfunding. Even if ThePact will not get is budget fully financed by its intended audience, their financial contribution should show traditional film financers that this film has an audience, and the contributed money will be the leverage the film needs to be made. Small sums are pure donations; but large sums will be considered as investments.
A committed crowd will help in financing the film -- and also help spread the word about the film. Naturally, the film has to be worth talking about -- you have to be remarkable to be remarked about -- so the onus is still on the film's creative forces to make a good one.
