Theatre on the Square

Theatre on the Square is a community-based theatre located in the Massachusetts Ave Arts and Theater District in Chatham Arch of Indianapolis, Indiana. Theatre on the Square (TOTS) has two stages and produces classic and new plays and musicals year round. Stage Two is an intimate cabaret-style setting with tables, chairs and bar stools and seats sixty while the Christel DeHaan Main Stage, with traditional theater seating, accommodates 120 patrons.
Programming
, an alternative weekly Indianapolis newspaper, described TOTS in 2013: "Bawdy comedy, racy themes and side-splitting laughter... (bringing) mayhem to the Mass Ave theater district. Spencer, who (directed) most shows in the theater’s season, (served) up spot-on comedic timing and cahones large enough to tackle any risqué issue, be it sexuality, religion or politics, with a wink and a chuckle. This community-based theater also opens its doors to IndyFringe Festival theater-goers each summer. Check out TOTS when you are in the mood for a raucous evening of taboo-ridden theater."
History
Founded by Ron Spencer in 1988, the theater was originally located in another Indianapolis historic neighborhood, Fountain Square. Originally an eighty seat playhouse with a single performance space, the theater outgrew its first home after five years and was relocated to 627 Massachusetts Avenue, a mere half block from Chatham Square.

Retirement
Since Ron Spencer's retirement in 2013, the TOTS Board and volunteers have successfully maintained programming to continue the organization's fiscal and artistic health, with funding previously lost now restored, and a renovated lobby that now hosts art exhibitions.
