The Winford Centre for Children and Women

The Winford Centre for Children and Women is a non-governmental organisation based in Lagos,Nigeria, that supports children with autism, ADHD, and other developmental disabilities. Founded in 2016 by Dr Basirat Razaq-Shuaib, the organisation focuses on providing education, advocacy, and welfare support for children with disabilities and their families.
Activities and Initiatives
The Winford Centre for Children and Women conducts programs in three main areas: advocacy, capacity strengthening, and research. Its initiatives include:
* Advocacy: The organisation works to influence policy and raise awareness about disability inclusion in Nigeria. It has collaborated with entities such as UNESCO and the British Council to promote inclusive education. In 2024, the organisation was granted Observer Status with the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), a body of the African Union. This status allows the organisation to contribute to the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
* Capacity strengthening: The Winford Centre for Children and Women provides training for educators, policymakers, and families to better support children with disabilities. These efforts aim to improve the competency of schools, educators, and families in meeting the needs of children with disabilities. The organisation also works to enhance the well-being and economic participation of mothers of children with disabilities through targeted programs.
* Research: The organisation conducts studies on the challenges faced by children with neurodevelopmental disorders in accessing education. For example, a 2017 survey by the organisation highlighted the lack of accessible educational services for children with disabilities in Nigeria.
The Winford Centre for Children and Women is also a participant in the United Nations Global Compact, a voluntary initiative that encourages businesses and organisations worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.
In 2019, the organisation published a children’s picture book titled I Am Not Naughty—I Really Really Mean It!, which addresses ADHD and received a commendation from the British Council ELTons Awards in 2020. The book has been translated into German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
