The Vision of Children Foundation is an organization whose purpose is to cure hereditary childhood blindness and other vision disorders and to improve the lives of visually impaired individuals and their families. History Vision of Children was founded in 1991 by Sam and Vivian Hardage of San Diego after they found out their son was born with ocular albinism. They were told by their son's doctor that the condition was incurable, but discovered that no research was being directed toward the condition. VOC's goal is to create models of each of the rare, inherited diseases, isolate the genes responsible, design corrective gene sequences, and identify new therapies for treatment. The test uses a blood sample to determine the presence of the OA1 gene that causes most cases of ocular albinism, and can determine whether a family is at risk of transmitting the gene to children, confirming difficult-to-diagnose cases, and providing pre-natal diagnosis. A similar test is also available for European families through the Laboratorio Biologia Molecolare Clinica in Milan, Italy. In 2003, VOC launched a program to support visually impaired students in schools by providing handheld video magnifiers.
