thumb The Sound World in an Australian charity organisation with the goal of providing cochlear implants and follow up speech/hearing rehabilitation to deaf children worldwide. Origin *The Sound World was started by Rosa Alpert, owner of Cara&Co after hearing a story in 2007 about one child's struggle to get cochlear implant surgery. *The program was initially limited to Russia (the native country of the program founder), but was later extended as a global charity. *The organisation was officially launched February 4, 2010 in Sydney. Cochlear Implants *About 3 in 1000 children are born with permanent hearing loss. *Cochlear implants do not cure deafness, and not all causes of deafness can be circumvented by cochlear implants. *The Deaf community are generally opposed to this surgery, and prefer a bimodal-bilingual education instead. *Cochlear implants can't be worn in MRI scanners, if the need arises for an implanted person to be scanned, a portion of the implant must be surgically removed. Spokespersons *January 2012 - Akira Isogawa, famous Australian designer, became official Ambassador of The Sound World Australia in international scale.
