The aim of Australian Federation of International Students (AFIS) is to help international students maximize their study experience in Australia. It was started in 2002 by the current honorary president Wesa Chau, and have been working in partnership with government and other stakeholders to create a positive environment for international students. The organisation has a number of programs to support its main, including: - Direct support to students - Cultural programs - Orientation programs at Tafes and private colleges Main operations of AFIS is in Victoria, but also plays an active role in New South Wales and South Australia. AFIS has been commenting on international student issues, ranging from migration, housing to student exploitation, in various Australian media. AFIS has a high profile in many Australian sources. AFIS is a contributor to the following important inquiries, taskforces, reviews into international education. Federal Senate Inquiry into the Welfare of International Students Senate Inquiry into The Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment (Re-registration of Providers and Other Measures) Bill 2009 Senate Inquiry on Suicide in Australia Baird review into International Students State Victoria Overseas Student Experience Taskforce 2010 Celebrate International Women's Day with International Students The march was organised with the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women Coalition (VIRWC) supported by AFIS, with more than 100 female students attended. Safety Forum with Simon Overland Simon Overland spoke at the forum informing students of safety concerns and provided tips on how to keep themselves safe living in Victoria. 2009 GLoBALL Program The program introduces international students to Australian Football and to experience Aussie Rules, activities include game visits, football clinics and games, career and health seminars and participation in EFC community events and activities. The program also aims to break down misconceptions and strengthen cross-cultural ties between the wider community and international students.
