The new communication technology in indonesia

TESTING Wimax ( 802.16e) IN the Electronics DEPARTMENT of FTUI
The Electronic Departement of the Faculty of Engineering, University Indonesia (FTUI) in cooperation with PT Air Span Indonesia performed a wireless communication system implementation testing by using WiMAX technology (IEEE 802.16e). This testing was first time conducted by an education institution in Indonesia. WiMAX is estimated to become the appropriate technology to be applied in Indonesia, remembering the cheap expense, availability of the big bandwidth (33 MB/s) and also the area reach (radius of 35 km). Performance of WiMAX will be measured based on throughput, transmission speed, delay and packet loss. Installation of WiMAX base station is located in the Telecommunications Electronic Department laboratory, FTUI. Macromax base station that are used are equipped with single antenna dipole with 4 CPE (Customer Premises Equipment)-2 indoors and 2 outdoors. By the end of the examination period, there will be achieved a performance analysis result and eligibility of WiMAX implementation in FTUI. Furtheron, the implementation of Wimax in FTUI will be executed based on the provision of goods from the B Competition Grant Program in the Electronic Department FTUI. Currently, FTUI Electronic Department is entering its second year of the B Grant Program implementation which is a competitive defrayal given by DIKTI to 9 Departments scored best in Indonesia. The B Grant program focuses on contribution in solving information and communications technology (ICT) national problems through up-to-date research and policy study and also development of technology for the public.
SPREAD SPECTRUM IN INDONESIA
Spread Spectrum usually use in Indonesia many applied in computer networks, especially Wave LAN. Wave LAN use spread spectrum for the process of its data transmission. This system is made in the card form. Wave LAN have high speed for radio technology at low frequency that is 1,5 Mbit/s. With that speed, Wave LAN has equal with IT communications in VSAT which is often used for communications in Indonesia. This speed also faster than fastest radio modem (commonly modem radio used is 64 kbit/s). One of the university in Indonesia has used Wave LAN is Bandung Technological Institute (BTI). BTI used Wave LAN brand Karlnet Inc. (Karlbridge) with the speed is 2 Mbit/s. Its range can reach 30 miles. This Wave LAN’s equipment is donated by PT. Compact Microwave Indonesia (CMI) to test-drive.
Another field use spread spectrum is telecommunication. One of benefit use spread spectrum is applicable for multiple accesses in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). CDMA System is a multiple access system that can be used at the same time and frequency. The way to using CDMA is utilize different codes. In compare with another multiple access system like FDMA (Frequency Division Multiple Access) and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), then CDMA is admiring system by communication companies, because it can be used at same frequency concurrently. In Indonesia, there are few communication companies using CDMA system for its telecommunications infrastructure. Most of cellular phone companies using TDMA system that is for GSM cellular phone. Cellular phone company has been used CDMA system is Komselindo. System has been used is narrow-band CDMA and Komselindo also will make infrastructure for wide-band CDMA.

Biometric System
Biometric System. It is one of the new communication technology to verify a person’s identity without using password. Biometric System is an automatic identification system of an individual based on physiological traits or characteristics. This technology emphasizes the coallision between technology and it social implication. This system brings some implication, for example: technological, legal, political, etc. One of implementation from this system is fingerprint identification. The data from characteristic, form, and type of fingerprint will be stored as a significant information for related problem. Then, all of stored information will be connected with computer system to analyzed. This system may give a lot of important information which can not acces with the simple tool. But many critics say that the type of this system can only work well in a controlled environment, not in the real world. The important question one about this technology was how broadly this tool would be used without the compatible constraints.
Video on Demand
Video-On-Demand (VOD). VOD is implementation from a goal of the communication industry to provide viewers with more control over programming choices. VOD help this user to have pay-per-view (PPV), for movie, concert, and other special event. VOD expands this capability by supporting more diverse programming pool. We may chose our favorite program as soon as we want watch. It also give us facility to keep and watch the program in our relax time, not always when the program launched. VOD also reflects a fallout of the new communication technology. Rather than serving the mass audience, individual needs could now be satisfied.
Transmission Data Technology
Every year, communications technology increase in the entire world. New technology, which created in other side of the world, will also enter Indonesia market and are very well welcome. The need of new communications technology increased in the same direction with the growth of people mobility. As the mobility become higher, people need new kind of technology to transmit data effectively, easy and accessible everywhere and every time. Nowadays there a lot of technology being offered such as Wi-Fi, GPRS, CDMA until satellite. In Indonesia it self, just relative new that people can work online every where and ever time by using hotspot. A few years ago, people already satisfied when she/he could access Internet from office or from Internet café. But now, often in big city, people already able to use data access service almost in every part of the city. In Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city, is easy to find some people in café, campus or car use wireless Internet access. Even this wireless service still can not be found everywhere, only in hotspot area. Hotspot becomes familiar. It can be happens because the uses of mobile and wireless technology had been increase. The popularity of Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) makes the possibility that a lot of hotspot being made everywhere. In the beginning, this technology was only provided in business office, to make wireless efficiency. The rapid growth of hotspot in this country of course a little bit too late if we compare it with another country such as Europe and America, the place where this technology come from. In this country, a few years ago there were only two network technology, which supplies transmission data service, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). By using GPRS, people can still connected with internet in the place where no hotspot found. The second technology, CDMA is just like GPRS, but the access if faster. Nowadays, Indonesia already use new mobile technology that we call 3G (the third generations of hand phone service). This service is faster that the other, the speed is in Mbit/s. Indonesia is a country of thousand islands. That’s why it such a difficult thing to make all the place have the same access to internet. Only 85 % have the connection to telecommunications systems. That’s way to reach untouched place, the only way is by using satellites. The rapid growths of Internet also impact the mobile companies in Indonesia. The satellite industries play an important rule here, because now we can access internet by using mobile and it directly connected with satellites. This kind of new communication products also being facilitated with high speed connection, so it needs only a moment to transfer data. All this kind of new communications technology still faced some difficulties to be adopted widely in entire of Indonesia. One of the main reasons is because this service needs a lot of money and almost Indonesian people still had difficulties to earn a living. So this technology is only reached by a few people. Beside of the price is expensive, not all Indonesian people being well educated and have the capability to understand a way to operate technology.
