The Gower School

The Gower School is a nursery and school in Islington, north London. It comprises two sites, The Gower School North Road, which is a Montessori nursery for children aged from 6 months to 5 years, and The Gower School Barnsbury, a Montessori primary school for children aged 4-11 .
History
The Gower School opened in September 2000 in North Road, with four children, initially taking children up to the age of 5. In 2003 it expanded its age range upwards to age 7, and in 2006 up to age 11.
In 2007 it opened its second building, The Gower School Barnsbury, in Cynthia Street, catering for children aged 4-11. The new building was designed by London architects Architype.
The Gower School North Road
The North Road school comprises six rooms catering for babies up to children aged five (Les Nounours, Les Petits Lapins, Les Petits Poussins, Les Petites Souris, Les Papillons and Les Dauphins). In total it provides care and education for 95 children. Children go on from this school to the Barnsbury school, or to other good schools.
The Gower School Barnsbury
The Barnsbury school opened in September 2007 and educates children aged from 4-11. Children are educated in three multi-age groups: Les Hiboux, Les Baleines and Les Rennes. In total 60 children are currently educated at this school.
Admission arrangements
The school holds regular open days for prospective parents on both sites, and will provide tours for prospective parents on request. Places at both schools are over-subscribed.
Educational philosophy
The nursery started with a mainstream approach, but has increasingly embraced the Montessori philosophy as a way of implementing its approach to empowering and educating the whole child.
It now offers education based on the Montessori philosophy throughout its provision.
It recently became one of the first two schools to be judged "excellent" by the Montessori Evaluation Accreditation Board (MEAB).
The children's education meets all the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The school has a wide range of after-school enrichment activities, ranging from Mandarin Chinese and ballet, choir and individual music lessons.
Environmental credentials
In 2007 the school won the 'green mark' award, accredited by the London Environment Centre.
Management
The Gower School was founded by Emma Gowers, who is its Principal and proprietor. Miss Sandra Talton is Head of Nursery School at the North Road school, and Mrs Claire Corns is Director of Studies at The Gower School Barnsbury.
