Background and release
In interview, Simmons indicated that his interest in rapping began at the age of five, though at some point he took a break of unspecified length until 2007. though he told MTV News that, "It was really something that I picked up and did on my own. I was just writing for a while and doing my thing. It started off, I was just doing joints off my Macbook on GarageBand."
Simmons' father, pioneering rapper was initially skeptical of Simmons' desire to become a rapper until he heard the mixtape, in which his son impressed him with his rhymes.
In a separate interview with the site, when asked about his family helping him with his music success, Simmons said that he did not use his father or uncle, Russell Simmons, to push the project. The mixtape was originally set for release on November 27, 2009, but was delayed until December 2, 2009, to tweak certain tracks.
