The Desert (band)

The Desert are a Bristol-based 2 piece of Gina Leonard and Tom Fryer. The pair met at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 2014 following an impromptu gig by Leonard at The People's Front Room, a touring venue run by a collective that Tom has been working and playing with since 2012. Gina had been writing, performing and releasing records online as a solo artist in Cambridge and London around this period.
After their meeting Tom started producing songs for Gina in Bristol alongside writing and performing with the band Three London Planes. These gradually developed in style and complexity until the two started The Desert in 2017.
After recording and releasing the ‘Half Hearted EP’ in January 2018, they recruited bassist/producer Ryan Rogers and drummer/producer Jonny Parry for the live band. Now as a four-piece the band have begun recording their 2nd EP.
The band take its name from 'the desert of the self', a concept that Carl Jung writes about in 'The Red Book'.
Over the course of their career they have enjoyed radio airplay by BBC Introducing & Tom Robinson on his BBC Radio 6 show, who stated "Just Get High... in the finest Bristol tradition, features a lovely emotional vocal by Gina Leonard
over the detailed and grooving production of Tom Fryer" and performed at both Liverpool’s Sound City and The Great Escape Festival in Brighton.
