The Boomerang Kid

The Boomerang Kid, by Chris Econn was a work of interactive theatre that premiered at the Powerhouse Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The production ran from June 8th, 2007 to July 14, 2007.
Unlike many previous works of the stage that use the term "interactive theater" to describe Site-specific theatre (like Tony n' Tina's Wedding), The Boomerang Kid incorporated mobile technology (developed exclusively for the production) to allow audience members to manipulate the plot and to choose on behalf of the main character throughout the narrative, in real time, leading to over 50 possible story variations. The audience saw a full narrative twice in the same evening, once in the first act and once again after intermission, and the experience was that of two completely different plays. Unlike the interactivity found in Improvisational theatre, all the various narratives in The Boomerang Kid were fully scripted.
During each performance the audience assumed the role of the main character, "You", who, as the play began, was trying make it in life on his own without the assistance of his parents. The three major plot threads that audiences could experience during each performance involved "You" climbing up the corporate ladder at a start-up tech company, being locked away in an insane asylum and getting lost in the jungles of Mexico.
The original 2007 production was directed by Ryan Dixon and starred Josh Andrew Koenig as the "M.C." and Tyler Poelle as "You." The production received generally positive reviews from critics, including LA Weekly, Campus Circle and LA Splash.
