TextAloud is a text to speech software made by Nextup. It allows users to convert text to .mp3, .wav or .wma. Version History Version 1.0 was released in 2001, version 2.0 was released in 2004 and version 3.0 is currently in private beta. Features TextAloud 2.303 is the current version with a third version currently under a Beta testing process. Originally, the program was advertised mainly as a ‘Text to MP3’ program, where the focus was on the fact that articles on the web or in documents could be converted into an mp3, making it convenient for a user to listen to documents, news articles, blogs, etc on the go by transferring several articles to a portable mp3 player where they could later be listened to on the go (in the car, while jogging, etc). Yet, the program’s strongest quality is its ability to aid those who suffer from afflictions like visual impairments and dyslexia, as well as aid those who suffer from eye strain, by reading articles on the user’s screen in a computerized voice. It is also suitable for creative writers, lecturers, and the like by using it as a way to proof-read your documents by having them read back to you. The current version is capable of reading from web pages, emails, documents such as MS Word, Word Perfect, Writer, Pdf, etc. by way of proofreading or importing the document(s) as a text file into TextAloud’s native user interface. As a base program, it is only capable of reading with the provided default voice in Windows - Microsoft Sam or Mary - But there are other voices of similar quality that can also be used and downloaded for free. Additionally, higher quality voices can be purchased from various vendors to enhance the user’s experience if a more natural voice is preferred. The program supports both Sapi4 and Sapi5 and comes with several useful tools such as a batch converter that enables several articles to be converted to mp3’s at once, a file splitter that allows large documents to be broken into smaller ones, a robust pronunciation editora that also supports RegEx, Sapi5xml, as well as Pitch, Volume, and Speed adjustments for voices that support it. Currently, TextAloud 2 makes a temporary .wav file before converting into .mp3 whilst TextAloud 3 will convert directly to the selected format.
