Techno-mathematics

Education

Techno-mathematics is an extension of disciplines of history of mathematics and ethnomathematics and is directly linked with the digital technology of the 21st Century. It refers to the need for educators to make sense of how the present status of mathematics education, our desire to transform learning from an individualistic approach to a more culturally relevant approach, and the technological landscapes in which we live in, come together in mathematics classrooms. A techno-mathematical approach contrasts the individualistic teaching approaches of constructivism and dialectics since it requires that educators confront cultural and historical tensions between dominant cultures and those in which the teacher is operating.

Applied Mathematics

Techno-mathematics is the art and science of applying mathematics and computational models into real world problem areas in industrial research and applied science, such as measurements, experiments and intelligent data-analysis, modeling and simulation of systems and processes, production management and process monitoring/control, financial models, risk analysis and decision support systems.

Techno-mathematics is a important for development as it takes mathematical tools directly to people’s daily activities. This area of study and its application has been very successful in developed countries, but the importance of this knowledge to developing countries must be emphasized due to globalization.
