Te Karehu

Te Karehu was the daughter of Te Maoi, a Ngapuhi chief of the Ngai Tawake Iwi (tribe) and his wife Te Auparo. They resided at Okuratope Pa, Waimate North, near the Bay of Islands. In 1800, Te Karehu and her mother Te Auparo, were murdered and eaten when a Ngare Raumati war party attacked Okuratope Pa. Sissons, Wi Hongi, & Hohepa (2001) state: '...then they came upon Te Auparo at work in her keha (that is turnip) garden. She was killed there....Te Auparo's daughter was taken away alive....When they reached Te Waiwhakaata, they lit their earth oven and thrust that girl onto the fire....She was cooked and eaten by Te Ngare Raumati.'
