Thanjavur (Tamil : தஞ�சாவூர�), also known by its anglicised name Tanjore, is a city and a municipality in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located about 10 km to the south of the Kaveri River, Thanjavur is the headquarters of Thanjavur District. Thanjavur derives its name from Tanjan - an asura (demon) who according to local legend, caused devastation and was killed by Sri Anandavalli Amman and Sri Neelamegapperumal. Tanjan's last request, that the city might be named after him, was granted. Thanjavur has the reputation of being the "Rice bowl of Tamil Nadu".




Profile of Thanjavur District

Thanjavur is popularly known as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu, India. This district lies at the Kaveri delta region, the most fertile region in the state. River Cauvery and its tributaries irrigate the district. Paddy is the principal crop which accounts for major portion of the cropped area and the other crops are Sugarcane, Banana, Pulses and Oil Seeds. The major source of Irrigation are Canals (96%). The district has a total of 6505 SSI Units, 9 Medium and Large Scale Units, 7074 Cottage Industries and 8810 Handicraft Industries. There are in total 785 inhabitated villages in the district. The district has a vast network of commercial and co-operative bank branches.
