Swimwire is a basic social networking aggregator. It enables users to create a page that lists and links to other popular websites they have accounts with, as well as letting users 'connect' with one another and post comments. The service is free and advert supported, with a single banner advert placed at the top of each page. Summary Launched in early 2009, Swimwire remains largely unnoticed until featured on KillerStartups.com and FeedMyApp.com. From this point onwards a steady stream of users signed up. In April 2009 Swimwire added a referral and user-points feature as an incentive for users to sign up - referring others gave the referrer 'user points' a point system on the website. Swimwire continues to serve as an online aggregator, for sites such as YouTube, Flickr, MySpace and Facebook, although currently the site supports over 40 websites as well as a space for a selected forum and user's Personal Website. Website Usage The site has a tabbed interface. Each user's profile has 5 tabs: About (Gives basic information on the user), More Info (gives further information on the user), Sites (lists and links to the websites the user can be found on), Connections (shows the user's 'Connections', people who know them) and Profile Book (the user's guestbook). Each tab can be edited respectively on the Edit Profile page. Fields left blank do not appear on the user's profile. Technology Swimwire is powered by Joomla running the Community Builder extension. The adverts are served by AdBrite.
