A Sweatshirt of Shame is the term applied to a sweatshirt that is bought as an emergency source of warmth for people caught without proper clothing in the cold weather. The sweatshirt is typically of the lowest price that can be mustered at a local store, and therefore might be particularly ugly. In fact, the design of the sweatshirt by the sweatshirt of shame rules
History The term was first used in San Francisco in 1996, when a group of 5 friends made a mid-day trip up to San Francisco from San Jose see the sights and have dinner. One of the group mentioned to everyone before leaving that everyone should grab a sweatshirt or jacket because it might be cold in the evening. One member announced "I'll be fine without a jacket" and rebuked the thought of needing a sweatshirt to stay warm on such a sunny day.
Later that evening after dinner as the group walked around North Beach, the jacketless member was shivering so badly that he finally had to duck into a tourist store to get an extra layer of clothing. When he emerged, he was wearing a bright white sweatshirt that was clearly too small in the arms and waist with gold lettering and the words 'San Francisco, 1994' on it (the wrong date).
The sweatshirt was immediately dubbed 'the sweatshirt of shame' and the wearer's only comment that could be heard through the laughter was "Whatever. It cost me 3 dollars."
Rules 1. Sweatshirt must be bought or acquired by the wearer. 2. Sweatshirt must be worn as a mark of shame on the outside, not underneath other clothing or someone's jacket. 3. Wearer must acquire the absolute cheapest and gaudiest sweatshirt possible in order to ensure that a certain level of shame is inflicted upon them. The sweatshirt can be swapped or otherwise acquired, off of random people on the street in exchange for performing a song or dance (often a shameful experience) or other form of dare.
