Susan Baker

Susan Baker is a physical therapist, author, and educator, who wrote numerous papers on physical therapy.
Education
Susan Baker earned three degrees from Loma Linda University: a B.S. in Physical Therapy in 1976; an M.S. in Physical Therapy in 1996; and a D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) in 2000. She gained attention with her dissertation, "Patient Participation in Physical Therapy Goal Setting."
Susan Baker is married to Delbert Baker, president of Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. The couple has three sons: David, a doctor of physical therapy who practices in Southern California; Benjamin, an author and educator; and Jonathan, a corporate engineer specializing in human capital and labor relations. The Bakers also have a daughter-in-law, the former Denise Marinella (married to David), who is also a doctor of physical therapy and practices in Southern California.
Career
Baker began practicing as a licensed physical therapy in 1976, initially specializing in pediatrics. In 1985 she expanded to geriatric physical therapy in which she became a board certified specialist. Baker was an item writer for the National Physical Therapy Licensing Examination in the 1990s.
In 1996 Baker entered academia as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University, School of Physical Therapy,. In 1998 she became director of the Allied Health Program and Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at Oakwood University.
Baker has received awards in physical therapy and teaching, including the Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Inquiry Award from the American Physical Therapy Association.
Research
Baker conducted a study entitled "Patient Participation in Physical Therapy Goal Setting" for her doctoral dissertation.
Baker has published scholarly articles on exercise and muscle physiology, balance/proprioceptive disorders, Type II Diabetes and exercise, patient participation goal setting, and normal/abnormal aging.
