Valeria Hicks Nelson

Valeria Hicks Nelson (1965- ) is an educator and Mississippi writer and poet, born in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Attended Jackson State University (B.S., 1987) and University of Arkansas (M.S., 1996). Founder of the Mississippi Endowment of the Arts and the Mississippi Endowment for Cultural and Civic Arts, two arts foundations dedicated to educating artists and lovers of the arts created and sustained in Mississippi. Author of short stories and online books. Author of poetic works such as: "Mississippi Song", "Don't Let Nobody Tell You Black Ain't Beautiful" and "Submission", which will be published as part of a collection of poems and short stories in June, 2007 (Evergreen Press; Jackson, Mississippi). Currently writing a book about the history of hip-hop and rap music in Mississippi entitled, Mississippi Rap and Hip-Hop: A History, 1985 to Present (Evergreen Press; Jackson, Mississippi).
