Sunnydale High

Sunnydale High is a fictional high school in Joss Whedon's TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and associated books and comics. Located in fictionalSunnydale, California, it serves as a main setting for much of early Buffy.

History

Buffy Summers joins Sunnydale High after being expelled from Hemery High after the events of the film. She meets fellow Scooby Gang members Willow and Xander here, while her new Watcher, Rupert Giles, is the schools librarian.

It was headed by Principal Bob Flutie early in the first season. After he was eaten by possessed students in "The Pack", Principal Snyder took over on the recommendation of Mayor Richard Wilkins. The Master rose in the season finale after the Sunnydale High School library showed itself to be on top of the Hellmouth, a subterranean, mystical portal into Hell.

The school is destroyed at the end of season three in the battle with the Mayor, with Principal Snyder being eaten (as Principal Flutie before him) by the Mayor/Demon.
It is possible that the boast made by the Class of 1999 at their prom, that the graduating class had the lowest mortality rate in Sunnydale history, went with the battle.

In the fourth season episode "Doomed" the Scooby Gang (now at college) go back to the burnt out school to defeat demons trying to destroy the world. The burnt out school is also featured in Season 5 when Willow and Tara look for Riley.

By season seven the school has been rebuilt in time for Dawn Summers to start her sophomore year. The Hellmouth now being located below new Principal, Robin Wood's office. The school is again destroyed at the end of the season seven when the whole of (an empty) Sunnydale is sucked into the Hellmouth in the battle with the First Evil.

Filming location

The real building is Torrance High School, located at 2200 W. Carson St, Torrance, CA 90501, approximately 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The exterior shots of New Sunnydale High were filmed at California State University, Northridge in Northridge, California.
