Stuart King

Stuart Thomas King (born December 27, 1970) is a British Labour politician and parliamentary candidate for Putney at the next general election.

Background

King was born in Wandsworth, London on December 27th, 1970 and has lived in the borough for the subsequent 37 years. His father Tom was a local dustman while his mum, Pat, worked in Boots in the Wandsworth Arndale for over twenty years.

Stuart went to Allfarthing Primary School in Wandsworth of which he is now a Governor. He graduated a Degree in History from the University of Nottingham in 1991. He plays football for a Roehampton-based Sunday League Football Team: Mulladween, who have won promotion for the past two seasons. He supports Queens Park Rangers F.C.

King married his wife Natalie in July 2007.

Political career

In 1987 King joined the Labour Party, and after winning a number of internal party positions over the years was in 1998 selected as a council candidate for Tooting ward, the area of Tooting approximately between Summerstown and Tooting High Street. In the Council Elections of May 1998 King was elected to Wandsworth Borough Council.

He was speaker on the environment, which included the state of the borough's streets, recycling and parks. King was re-elected to the Council in 2002 and became Chief Whip of the Labour Group in addition to his environment responsibilities, then its Deputy Leader, becoming Leader of the Opposition in 2005.

King is also active in his Trade Union (formerly Amicus), serving on their National and London Political Committees. At its biennial meeting in November 2006, King was elected to serve on the Board of the London Labour Party.

On Sunday 10th June 2007, King was chosen by local Labour Party members from across Putney, Roehampton and Southfields to seek election as the next Member of Parliament at the coming general election, beating five other candidates.
