Stephen Verges

Stephen Verges is an American painter born in Washington D.C. He is the son of Stephen Verges & Susan Snodgrass. Stephen Verges is a third generation Spanish American, his family has worked for the King of Spain since the end of the crusades offering the French Knight, Stephen Verges I, with a title of Baron as well as a small town in Gerona, Spain, known today as Verges. Stephen Verges's mother, Susan Snodgrass is a celebrated doll artist with a permanent piece articulated in the Louvre, she received International attention, sharing the creative mind with her son Stephen Verges. Susan Snodgrass was married to Benjamin Sonnenberg Jr, who's father was Benjamin Sonnenberg, the public relations pioneer & famous arts philanthropist. During this marriage Verges was introduced to an artist by the name of Red Grooms, who by the artists crazy antics of avant garde works & lifestyle would assist Verges to produce art in any medium. Verges produced a number of pieces in the late eighties. He was taught by Lucille Beards, a patron & ballet teacher to Louise Nevillson, about the spectrum of reality versus the illusions of art. He worked as a technical assistant for the Human Rights Band, the Bad Brains and the Cro-Mags during a break from art.

After of September 11, 2001, he volunteered for a job with the military where he served overseas. In 2004 he expressed interest to some people he served overseas with to paint some images of overseas happenings.

He says "These are paintings that don't fit any norm because the work was to never serve a conventional cipher much less to be viewed by one, I've neglected to paint the O.K. corral to the dismay of almost everyone even better I'm motivated enough to have painted a human agenda which as an arrogant altruism can't be found in many painted works of art in this day regarding this subject, would I paint this type of body of work again, no, but I welcome anyone else to give it a shot".

Stephen Verges proved an unconventional national as well as international success, by continuing his series that was heralded by Ambassador Jawad of the Afghanistan Embassy in Washington DC. He was invited to exhibit his works of art at the Afghanistan Embassy by the political advisor & author of "Shadow over Afghanistan", Mr Fazel Fazel, for the Afghanistan Independence Day celebration marking their independence from British colonial rule.

His current projects for two thousand seven have been TARIN KOWT, a twenty five foot Ratha Yatra cart, a series of horses for the Shriver family, a twenty five foot oil painting titled "Black Jack Johnson" in honor of the first African American Heavyweight Boxer, Jack Johnson.

He will be working on a series of paintings with Sgt. James "Jim" Arender, the first American World Skydiving champion, for fall two thousand seven.
