Stephan H. Miller

Stephan H. Miller (born May 21, 1986) is a rising American-Israeli international political consultant. Miller was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and spent a year in Israel studying and volunteering as an ambulance medic before returning to the United States to earn his BA from the Elliott School of International Affairs of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.. In college, Miller founded the first international consulting firm focused on collegiate student government elections. After working for James Carville and working for the Hillary Clinton For President campaign, he now resides in Jerusalem, Israel and serves as an advisor to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

Miller founded Collegiate Consulting, a consulting firm that lasted 2 years and branded it as a firm that "understands Facebook, beer pong, student orgs, frats and campus newspapers...More importantly, we know how to use this understanding of college life...and political campaigns to make a collegiate campaign successful." He advised several candidates throughout the United States and abroad, including Nicole Capp during her successful campaign and presidency of the George Washington University Student Association. Nicole referred to Stephan as "the kind of guy that cuts to the chase" and the one who gave her "the advice I needed at every turn of the campaign trail," and also said his advice was "golden." Miller later defended Capp's legacy in two opinion pieces published in the GW Hatchet titled "Nicole Capp's SA Presidency Leaves a Legacy That Should Be Emulated" and "Opportunity Wasted."

Miller also advised the successful campaign of Adam Pike to become the Chair of the Union of Jewish Students in the United Kingdom, coining the slogan "The Right Strategy at the Right Time." Butch Oxendine, executive director of the American Student Government Association, expressed criticism of Miller's work, claiming that "it kind of scares me that even on the college level now things are becoming so commercialized."

During college, Miller worked for world renowned international political consultant and Democratic strategist James Carville and worked for the Hillary Clinton For President campaign in Nevada, Ohio, and Indiana. Carville said of Miller: "Some people meet, and some people do, he is a doer. He takes matters in his own hands, and I think he'll do quite well." In reference to Miller's work on the Hillary Clinton For President campaign, Carville said: “Young people always come to me and say, I want to work on campaigns. My answer is always, ‘What the hell are you asking me for, just go do it.’ They can learn something from him. Stephan's the kind of kid that just goes and does it.” In February 2008, Miller, along with 502 staff and volunteers, signed a letter of support for Hillary Rodham Clinton that was sent to the New York Times.

In 2008, Miller worked for the Greenberg, Carville, Shrum Issue Management Ltd. office in Tel Aviv, Israel alongside campaign strategists Tal Silberstein, George Birnbaum, and Arthur Finkelstein, and whose clients included several European Prime Ministers and dozens of Members of European Parliaments.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat

Miller joined the administration of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat shortly after his election to serve as the Advisor for Foreign Affair and Foreign Media, overseeing foreign policy, diplomatic relations, philanthropic relations, foreign media, foreign trips, and English language correspondence and speechwriting. He is a vocal defender of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat's policies and the international press often quotes Miller commenting on the controversial policies of house demolitions of illegal Arab structures and the construction of Jewish homes in East Jerusalem.

Quotes

:Jewish Housing in East Jerusalem
* "A spokesman for the Jerusalem municipality said building and planning across the city were moving ahead. “For us, it is business as usual,” the spokesman, Stephan Miller, said."
* "Stephan Miller, a spokesman to the mayor, said asking for a freeze is “an illegal demand in the United States, and illegal in the state of Israel” and “Jerusalem will continue to expand and grow for the benefit of all residents equally.”"
* ""This process is apolitical and professional," said Stephan Miller, spokesman for Jerusalem's mayor. He said that the project received its primary approval last summer and that last week's permit issuance was largely "technical" and "automatic" after payment of the fee."
* "They are allowed to build, just as anyone in the city can build, regardless of nationality, creed or religion. We will continue to issue permits to Jews, Christians and Muslims throughout the city of Jerusalem to ensure that Jerusalem can grow.”
* "In the words of Stephan Miller, spokesman for Jerusalem city: “Once any construction project in the city of Jerusalem has completed the permit process…it can begin construction, irrelevant of race, religion, creed and gender.”"

:House Demolitions
* "A spokesman for Jerusalem’s mayor, Nir Barkat, said Thursday that City Hall could not comment on the United Nations report without seeing it, but that Mr. Barkat was “committed to addressing the issue of affordable housing throughout the entirety of Jerusalem.” In the coming weeks, the spokesman, Stephan Miller, said, Mr. Barkat will present his master plan for the city of Jerusalem “which will, of course, include plans to provide more affordable housing in eastern Jerusalem.” Mr. Miller added that the mayor “will continue to uphold the rule of law and, as such, there will continue to be building demolitions if there is illegal construction.”"
* "Stephan Miller, a foreign affairs aide and spokesman for Mr. Barkat, said the mayor’s position was that either “we can remain with our heads in the sand like ostriches” and watch the quality of life of the residents worsen, or bring “proper planning” to communities that were “forgotten.” Asked whether any consideration had been given to the timing of Monday’s vote, given that indirect, American-brokered Israeli-Palestinian peace talks started in May, and Mr. Netanyahu plans to meet with President Obama in Washington on July 6, Mr. Miller said “absolutely not.”"
* "Nonetheless, Stephen Miller, a spokesman for Mayor Nir Barkat, responded on the general issue of demolitions in the capital. “The Municipality of Jerusalem works to uphold the rule of law throughout Jerusalem, and when a court decides that an illegal structure in the city must be demolished, the owner of the structure should expect the implementation of the rule of law,” Miller said. “The Municipality of Jerusalem implements structural demolitions throughout the city, in cooperation with the Israel Police and in coordination with the relevant government personnel. For security concerns, no comment is made on the process of specific structural demolitions until after they are completed,” he said."
