Stefano Cao

Stefano Cao (born 1951) is an Italian corporate executive.
Biography
Cao was born in Rome, where he attended Liceo Classico Statale Terenzio Mamiani and earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1976 from Università degli Studi di Roma (today La Sapienza University). He began his professional career in 1976 within Saipem, later moving to Eni group in 2000. He is Chairman of SPIG S.p.A. and shareholder and board member of Exploenergy S.p.A., an independent company active in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. He also sits on the management board of A2A S.p.A. and serves as non-executive director and chairman of the Risk Committee of Petrofac. He is a director of Autostrade per l'Italia S.p.A. and Aeroporti di Roma S.p.A. and sits on the advisory board of Ambienta SGR.
Career at Saipem S.p.A. (1976 - 2000)
In 1976, Stefano Cao made his entry into the Eni group as by Saipem as site and operations manager in the Offshore Construction division, a position he held until 1980. In this period he was also vessel superintendent on the Castoro Sei pipe-laying ship with responsibility for laying the Transmed subsea gas pipeline between Tunisia and Sicily. From 1980 to 1986 he served in various positions of responsibility abroad. He worked in the United Kingdom as project manager, in Denmark as area manager and in the North Sea as operation general manager for offshore pipelines. The major projects he managed during the period included the construction of a 500-km pipeline system on behalf of the Danish state companies Dong-Doras in Denmark. Upon his return to Italy in 1986, he was appointed engineering manager and, in 1988, assumed the role of vice general manager of the Offshore Construction division of the company. In 1991, when Saipem acquired the vessel Saipem 7000, Stefano Cao assumed responsibility and management of various offshore projects that exploited the lifting capacity (7000 tons) of the two cranes of the vessel. In 1993 he became technical and commercial general manager of the group and then, in 1996, was appointed managing director operations and, in 1999, executive chairman and CEO of the company. He left Saipem S.p.A. in 2000 after finalizing, in 1999, the contract to develop the Blue Stream international gas pipeline to transport natural gas from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea.
Career at ENI S.p.A. (2000 - 2008)
In 2000 Stefano Cao joined Eni as chief operating officer of the Exploration and Production division. Under his management, in 2001, Eni acquired Lasmo, a British hydrocarbon exploration and production company listed on the London Stock Exchange, through a public tender offer, and was appointed sole operator of Kashagan, an offshore field located in the North-Eastern part of the Caspian Sea. From 2002 to 2007 Eni acquired the Norwegian petroleum company Fortum, the ‘Mboundi field in Congo, the assets of the US company Dominion in the Gulf of Mexico and Burren Energy Ltd, a British exploration and production company. From 2002 to 2006 Stefano Cao also held the office of Chairman of Eni Corporate University S.p.A., the group-company specialized in the selection and training of human resources worldwide. Stefano Cao left Eni S.p.A. in July 2008. Under his management, the hydrocarbon production of the Exploration & Production division rose in eight years from 1,200,000 to almost 1,800,000 boe/day. These levels were achieved with the development of new fields, the acquisition of independent exploration and production companies and the purchase of new producing assets.
Experience at Sintonia SA (2009 - 2012)
In February 2009 he was appointed managing director and CEO of Sintonia SA ], holding company in the infrastructure sector, where he remained for four years. The shareholders of the company are: Edizione Holding (Benetton family), Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners, Mediobanca and GIC (sovereign fund of Singapore). By virtue of this role, in April 2009 he was appointed board member of Atlantia S.p.A, Autostrade per l'Italia S.p.A., Gemina S.p.A., Aeroporti di Roma S.p.A, Società Azionaria Gestione Aeroporto Torino S.p.A (SAGAT), Aeroporto di Firenze S.p.A. and Telecom Italia
Other positions
From 2002 to 2006 he was also Chairman of Assomineraria, part of Confindustria, an association of hydrocarbon exploration and production companies, oil-service companies and mining activities. From April 2007 to April 2008, he also served as independent director of Telecom Italia.
