Staff Sergeant Melvin Wayne Ross

Melvin Wayne Ross (born October 18, 1930 in Shawnee, Oklahoma) was a staff sergeant in the United States Army. His parents were Corporal Neeley Chester Ross and Ida Mae McConnell.
At age 16, Melvin lied about his age, said he was 18, and joined the United States Army.
He was stationed in Japan and was one of the very first troops to be sent to Korea after the North invaded. He landed on Pujan when the U.S. only held Pujan, and they fought north all the way to the China border.
Melvin always went by his middle name Wayne and was also well known as Slim Ross.
Wayne was discharged from the Army in 1952 at the age of 22. He moved back to Shawnee Oklahoma. In 1953 Wayne Married his sweetheart Carol Lorene Nicely in Arkansas City, Kansas. Together they had two sons Gary Wayne and Larry Keith.
On March 8, 1965, at the age of 34 Melvin died east of Shawnee, Oklahoma. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee Oklahoma.
