Elmer Thomas Hill

Elmer Thomas Hill (April 20, 1917 - October 11, 1998) Was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War 2. Born April 20 1917 in Oakland, California he was the oldest of four siblings. At age 18 he joined the US Army 9th Infantry Division stationed in Fort Bragg, NC. Expecting the United States to soon be at War, he re-enlisted after his first 4 year tour in 1939. He rose to the rank of Staff Seargent, and was the NCO for a 12 man squad in 1941 with the onset of World War 2. He participated in the invasions of Sicily, and Normandy/Northern France. He was wounded twice, receiving two (2) Purple hearts for his wounds received in battle. During the invasion of Sicily he was awarded a Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds he received during the Sicily campaign. During the invasion of Normandy on the morning of June 10, 1944 he was shot twice during the attack on Utah Beach. He received his 2nd Purple Heart for these wounds.
After the War he was honorably discharged, and moved back to California with his wife, (Lorraine) whom he had met while stationed and training in Oslo Norway in 1942. He had one (1) son (Thomas Lee Hill) born in 1952. His wife Lorraine died of liver failure in 1975, he never re-married, Elmer is survived by his son Thomas and his two (2) grandchildren (Douglas Elmer Lee Hill & Jennifer Lorraine Hill)
He is buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Susanville, California next to his wife Lorraine.
